Production relocation to Erfurt decided
Develey justifies this drastic step with the lack of long-term development prospects at the current location and with increasingly strict requirements for modern, sustainable production. In a press release, Managing Director Stefan Durach explains: "This decision was very difficult for us, as we have a long tradition with Düsseldorf." Nevertheless, the new, ultra-modern location in Erfurt is already established for other products of the group and will now also produce Löwensenf.
The end of a 300-year-old tradition
The history of mustard in Düsseldorf goes back almost 300 years. The first mustard factory in Germany was built here in 1726. Löwensenf itself was founded in 1903 and moved to the Rhine metropolis in 1918. Over the decades, the brand grew into one of the most famous mustard manufacturers in the country. In the 1960s, Löwensenf even took over the traditional ABB Bergrath mustard factory, thereby cementing Düsseldorf's reputation as the German mustard capital. But this era is now coming to an abrupt end.
54 employees fear for their future
The closure of the site affects 54 employees, including 40 in production and 14 in administration. Their future is uncertain. The company simply stated that it is working with the employee representatives on a "balancing of interests" . There is no concrete solution so far. Rumors of a possible departure were already circulating in 2017, as Löwensenf's production facility is located on rented land at Düsseldorf Airport. Report this page
